Ready or Not – Film Review

Hi!

Ready or Not is a 2019 American comedy horror film which was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett with the film starring Samara Weaving, Adam Brody and Mark O’Brien. The film is all about the main character Grace played by Weaving who after pulling a fateful card during an initiation game on her wedding night finds herself being hunted by her Satan-worshipping in-laws. The film was premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in July 2019 with it getting a theatrical release a month later by Fox, with it receiving positive reviews from critics who particularly praised the work from the cast. With the film only running for 95 minutes, and taking place in a single location, there was the point in this feature to create a cheaper horror film, with an overall budget of $6 million, but the film successfully grossed $57.6 million, making it a great success in terms of the financials. Preparations for this film to be released began in November 2017 with the group in charge of writing and directing getting hired the casting was completed a year later with filming only taking around a month from October – November 2018. It was filmed in locations around Toronto and Ontario with everything about the film being beautiful and a perfect piece in terms of simple thrillers, the comedy aspect of course takes away from the horror.

Army of Thieves – Film Review

Hi!

Army of Thieves is a 2021 heist comedy film directed by star Matthias Schweighofer based off a screenplay written by Shay Hatten who created it alongside Zack Snyder. With this film taking place as a prequel to Army of the Dead, we have only 1 of the same characters, with an understanding as to the basic premise of the film and where it will end up prior to getting near the conclusion. This gets rid of some of the drama that the film had contained within, but overall, the film is enjoyable, but not something that I would be in a rush to rewatch. The filming took place from October 2020 to December 2020 with the film then getting a release on October 29th 2021, the film took place in Germany and the Czech Republic for filming, meaning that it was filmed during the pandemic in Europe. Overall the film has received positive reviews from critics with praise being given to the way in which Matthias dealt with being a star and a director, which of course is a difficult task to complete. It has been noted that overall, the film struggles with some of the humour which seems to be played more strained compared to other comedic timings, but the playful nature of the film and the characters make the time feel like it is flowing in a much better way the other film in the series.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage – Film Review

Hi!

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a 2021 American superhero movie which is a sequel to 2018’s Venom, starring Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson. The series has always been plagued by those wondering how you can have the Venom character without Spider-Man appearing, but Sony have thus far found a way for the story to fit without coming across too silly. Andy Serkis got the role of director based off all the motion capture cgi experience he has from his time on Lord of the Rings & Planet of the Apes, and I have to say he knocked this film out of the park in terms of his direction, plan and how the film played out over time. The movie is only 90 minutes long, which made it an easy quick watch, was funny throughout and the action was solid thanks to great cgi. The short runtime meant that there no filler arc included in the story which is something that films can have a real issue with these days due to inflated runtimes / inclusion of more characters than required. VLTBC was originally set for release in October 2020, but like many films over the past year due to the pandemic it got delayed a few times, before finally getting a release in September of this year, but unlike some which have been constantly delayed or yet to be released, the film opened and has thus far been the 7th highest gross earner with critics giving mixed reviews while also accepting that it was an improvement over the 1st instalment.

Untitled Horror Movie – Review

Hi!

Untitled Horror Movie is a film that was shot during the coronavirus lockdowns last year with everything to do with the film, shooting, post-production, acting etc all being done at home for all involved. This of course poses interesting problems for the creatives included and at times can cause the viewer to wonder why everything we are seeing is done though a laptop / phone screen. But as we are all currently aware of the virus and the effects it has had, the film is a step up on others in the same genre such as Unfriended. The film was led by director Nick Simon who co-wrote the story with co-star Luke Baines. With everything that the cast could need getting shipped out to them, they received lights, makeup tutorials, audio and visual equipment. This demonstrated the potential that in the future films could be produced without the need for a close group of people to be interacting, similar to how when Saw was created, it was done in a couple of rooms with a small cast. With a strong cast including Katherine McNamara from Shadowhunters, Timothy Granaderos from 13 Reasons Why and Emmy Raver-Lampman from Umbrella Academy. We are able to get into a film that is effectively a satirical horror without ever feeling like it is cringy or over the top. It is a film that you can watch more than once if it is with company who have not yet seen it! But as always, we need to delve in a bit deeper before we can truly appreciate everything that was created for the film;

Santa Clarita Diet – Series Review

Hi!

Santa Clarita Diet was a Netflix show that began in 2017 and was marketed as a horror-comedy which stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant. The 1st season wastes no time in introducing the audience into what is going on and jumps straight into the show. We have a couple who are realtors with 1 daughter and their 2 neighbours families, thats it, thats the cast. With the cast actually getting smaller overall as the series progresses. Which is a great change from some of the shows I have been watching lately, the smaller cast allows every to get adequate screen time and for their craft to improve as time goes on. We are immediately plunged straight into the fact that Abby is sick and she begins throwing up violently with her throwing up what I think was her heart? As the show progresses she comes to realise that she needs to eat human flesh in order for her body to stabilise. We of course all the antics and hijinks that go with having a member of your family needing eat flesh to stay alive.

So thanks to the casting of the more comedic actors in this show and the place they are in life, the show lends itself to easy laughs and an incredibly easy watch in the best way possible. If you want to forget about the world for a little bit and just watch a fast paced show that will go by quickly, this is the one for you. I watched the series in about 3 days and didn’t feel the time go at all! It reminded me a lot of Dead to Me, which you should check out if you haven’t already!

Community – TV Series Review #6SeasonsandaMovie

Hi!

The TV Show Community created by Dan Harmon in 2009, ran for 6 years on 2 networks and for a total of 110 episodes. It is a show that has developed a cult following since its final episode in 2015, it has had 2 separate stints on Netflix which have been beneficial for it to gather new support from fans. It is a show that is based around an ensemble cast in a local community college ‘Greendale’. Harmon wrote the show based on his own encounters in community college with each episode following his ‘story circle’ template. This is a method designed to create effective and structured stories. The show is universally loved by those who have watched it, the comedy is something that most shows aspire for, the cast is diverse and they bounce off each other well. Throughout the run of the show, there were some issues on occasion which had to be dealt with both on and off screen. Such as Dan Harmon leaving for a season due to being fired, Chevy Chase being written out, Donald Glover leaving, and the show being cancelled at the end of its 5th season, before Yahoo renewed for its 6th go around! But what are my opinions on the show;?

I personally loved Community, I have seen the whole series through only twice, once a couple of months back and the other time was probably 5ish years ago right when it was on Yahoo. I enjoyed the comedy, the characters, the story for what it was and getting to see the actors grow during their time on the show. But I have to say, conducting a review of a show without any objective criteria is basically impossible and I don’t think of any interest to readers, so lets get into a breakdown;

Dead To Me – Netflix Series Review

Hi!

I had never watched the first season of Dead to Me, but when the second was released I started hearing positive things about the series and after watching Bloodline about a month ago, I needed something to fill the Linda Cardellini size hole in my life and this fitted right in! My review of the series will be in the same vein that I reviewed Hannibal, I think this reviews are slightly different to what I am used to reading when it comes to shows, so if you get a bit lost, I apologise. Let’s get to it;
